A transportation system can be defined as the combination of elements and their interactions, which produce the demand for travel within a given area and the supply of transportation services to satisfy this demand. This definition is general and flexible enough to be applied to different contexts. The specific structure of the system is defined by the problem itself (or class of problems) for whose solution it is employed.

Transportation systems engineering can be defined as a discipline aimed at the functional design of physical and/or organizational actions on transportation systems. Each set of coordinated, internally consistent actions is referred to as a project or plan. Our  transportation system engineer must also evaluate the main potential effects of the project(s) to test their technical suitability and to support intermediate and final decision-makers.

Although your supply chain may not require oversize/overweight shipments on a regular basis, there  will likely be a time when the need arises. If this level of specialized shipping is not within your comfort zone, you should turn to the expertise of a heavy haul carrier to guide you rather than trying to handle it on your own. An expert heavy haul carrier will have detailed answers to the following questions:

Before we understand the technical definition to qualify a cargo as ODC, we need to understand that the need for defining ODC is to ensure the safety of the road users. By qualifying a cargo as ODC and imposing regulations over carriage of ODC, government’s aim is to avoid any unsafe practices and accidents. Whether the government has made the correct decisions and imposed correct regulations remains a topic for another day.

In simplest terms, ODC or Over Dimensional Cargo is a cargo that protrudes outside the loading deck of the vehicle transporting the cargo. If a truck with loading platform length of 20 feet is loaded with cargo like TMT bars of length 22 feet, then the TMT bars qualifies as Over-Dimension Cargo. If the same TMT bars were loaded on a vehicle with platform length of 22+ feet, it would have been classified as Normal Cargo rather than ODC. This definition of ODC is to resist industry from transporting Normal Cargo unnecessarily as ODC for small economic benefits compromising road user’s safety.

 ODC full form in logistics

In transportation, ODC stands for “Over Dimensional Consignment.” It refers to goods or cargo that exceed the standard legal dimensions and weight limits set for transportation on roads, railways, or other modes of transport. ODC typically includes large, heavy, or oversized items that cannot be accommodated within the standard loading and transportation parameters.

ODC meaning

The term “Over Dimensional Consignment” implies that the size, weight, or dimensions of the cargo exceed the legal limits. This could include items such as machinery, equipment, prefabricated structures, industrial components, or even entire buildings. ODC may also include goods with irregular shapes or configurations that require special handling and transportation arrangements.

Transporting ODC requires careful planning and coordination to ensure the safe and efficient movement of the cargo.

It often involves obtaining special permits, route clearances, and escorts to navigate through various checkpoints and restrictions.

The transportation of ODC may involve the use of specialized trailers, cranes, or other equipment to handle and transport the oversized or heavy items.

ODC transportation is common in industries such as construction, infrastructure development, energy, and manufacturing, where large and heavy equipment or materials need to be transported to project sites.

It plays a crucial role in facilitating the movement of critical infrastructure components and supporting the growth of these industries.

Transportation companies specializing in ODC have expertise in handling the unique requirements and challenges associated with transporting oversized or heavy cargo.

They ensure compliance with legal regulations, undertake route surveys, provide necessary escort services, and utilize specialized equipment for safe and efficient transportation.

Q: What’s included in an oversize/overweight transportation plan?

A: Many moving parts must be coordinated when transporting oversize/overweight cargo—all of which should be outlined in the freight transportation plan. Each plan is unique to the scope of the project and should include (but not necessarily be limited to):

The weight, dimensions, and value of your load

The permits and equipment needed

Capabilities and access at the shipping/delivery location

The possible need for a route survey, escorts, or pole car

Potential repositioning of utility lines, signage, or guardrails

Applicable state-by-state requirements

Q: What securement procedures should be followed?

A: The correct securement procedures will vary based on freight characteristics and the trailer type used to haul your freight. These critical details will emerge during the pre-planning phase of the project.

We will guide you through this process and make proper recommendations. The details will determine the proper equipment and experience the truck operator must have in order to transport the load safely.

When a project or load requires expertise beyond your realm, particularly when it comes to something as complex as shipping oversize/overweight freight, make sure to rely on the support of a qualified and experienced carrier to get your shipment delivered safely.

Since the industry has seen many newcomers with little to no experience in the industry, there has been high rise in the accidents occurring en-route. The most common reason is the lack of basic safety precautions, poor knowledge of en-route obstacles and lack of workforce training. Oceanic Express LLP  has an extensive experience of over 4 decades in the ODC industry. In all these years we have developed an extensive database of en-route obstacles. Oceanic Express LLP  is an ODC and Heavy transport specialist with more than 4 decades of experience transporting Super Heavy and Super ODC cargo. We believe in ethical logistics and transparency. Our workforce has a minimum experience of 15 years in transporting ODC. These strengths has helped us conquer all the areas of Project logistics, from ODC to Critical ODC to Super ODC with 100% error free record.
